What actually is reading?

You've heard me talking about reading and books. But what actually is reading?

Wherever I go, there would always be a book with me just in case I got any free time. I would read wherever I could. It wasn't until recently that a kid came up to me and asked why I read. I was so stunned that I didn't know how to answer. I could've just answered with something like it's my hobby or because I love to. Because inside I knew that wasn't what reading was.

The act of reading involves understanding the words written on a piece of paper and allowing them to transport us to a world beyond our imagination. It's like watching a movie, where we visualize the events of the story in our minds. Reading not only entertains us, but also helps develop crucial skills that we often overlook. It enhances our focus, improves our vision, and benefits our mental health overall.

Many learn and become fluent in languages through reading, be it books, newspapers, articles, or anything. Reading makes us more empathetic. When we read, we live the characters' lives. We feel what they feel whether it's sadness, happiness, or any emotions. That's the real definition of empathy. Standing in other's shoes and living their life. We also develop a better understanding of the situation or that certain world. To put yourself in the shoes of others and grow your capacity for empathy, you can hardly do better than reading fiction. Multiple studies have shown that imagining stories helps activate the regions of your brain responsible for better-understanding others and seeing the world from a new perspective

Hey there! Did you know that reading can take many forms? For instance, we can read for pleasure, education, or research purposes. Personally, I love losing myself in a good fiction or fantasy book. Interestingly, recent research suggests that reading literary fiction can actually help us develop important skills like empathy, theory of mind, and critical thinking. So, next time you're looking to unwind or learn something new, why not pick up a book and give it a try?

While many of us think that reading non-fiction is the best way to gain knowledge, research suggests that reading fiction can provide far more important benefits. For instance, reading fictional works can help us gain a better understanding of other people's motivations and increase our social awareness. On the other hand, while non-fiction reading can be useful for gathering information, it does little to cultivate our emotional intelligence (EQ), which is a more elusive and complex skill to develop.

The world of fiction offers a unique and powerful way to gain insight into the lives and experiences of others, while also providing an outlet for creativity and a means of sharpening the mind. Whether you are reading a novel, writing a short story, or exploring a fantasy world, fiction has the ability to transport you to new places and perspectives and to expand your understanding of the world around you.

One of the most common challenges faced by those who are just starting to develop a reading habit is their inability to read for extended periods of time without becoming fatigued or losing focus. The problem has been expressed by many beginners who are struggling to overcome this obstacle.

All you have to do is cultivate a regular reading habit.

Imagine yourself sitting in a cozy corner with a cup of coffee and a book in hand. Sounds like a perfect way to spend an afternoon, doesn't it? But with so many books to choose from, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and not know where to start. That's where creating a reading list comes in handy. To get started, think about the kind of books you enjoy and make a list of the ones you've always wanted to read but haven't had the chance to. For instance, if you love reading fiction, you can create a list of novels that you have been meaning to read. This way, you will always have a book waiting for you, and you can make the most of your reading time.

Reading is a great way to expand your knowledge and broaden your perspectives. However, it can be challenging to find the motivation to read consistently. One effective way to overcome this challenge is to set a clear goal for yourself. For instance, you can decide to read a certain number of books within a year or aim to read a specific number of pages each day. By working towards this goal, you can increase your reading frequency and make it a more regular part of your routine.

Reading can be a delightful and enriching experience, but finding the perfect spot to indulge in it can make it all the more enjoyable. The ideal location should be serene and devoid of any interruptions or distractions that may detract from the experience. Whether you prefer to snuggle up in your cozy bed, sink into a plush armchair or sofa, relax on a park bench amidst nature's beauty, or immerse yourself in the silence of a library, the perfect reading spot is out there waiting for you.

Carrying a book or an ebook with you at all times can be a life-changing habit. Whether it's a novel, a magazine, or a non-fiction book, having something to read whenever you get a chance can make your daily routine more enjoyable and productive. Instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media during your downtime, you can immerse yourself in a good book and expand your knowledge or escape into a fictional world. This simple habit can help you become a more well-read and informed individual, and may even inspire you to pursue your own writing or creative endeavors.

As we come to the end of this post, I sincerely hope that the information I have shared with you has been both relatable and inspirational. Reading is a wonderful activity that has the power to transform an individual, and I truly believe that it can work wonders for you too. In this post, we have delved deeper into the concept of reading, exploring its various types and discussing effective strategies to cultivate a reading habit. As an avid reader myself, I encourage you to pick up a book and start exploring the world of literature. And once you do, I bet your "to be read" list will start growing longer and longer!
